A letter to Edmund Bailey O'Callaghan, 1854, discusses missing copies of Reports; the unavailability of John Norton's "The redeemed captive"; references he used for his description of the taking of Fort Massachusetts in "The old Indian chronicle"; and the rarity of Benjamin Doolittle's "A short narrative...." Letters to Benson John Lossing, 1869-1871, discuss Lossing's "Pictorial field-book of the war of 1812," Lossing's new magazine "American historical record and repertory of notes and queries," his son Francis Samuel Drake's "Dictionary of American Biography," and an article on subscription books for Lossing's magazine. The collection also contains an engraving by Stephen Alonzo Schoff mounted together with an autograph.

Samuel Gardner Drake, antiquarian and author. Drake was born to Simeon and Love Muchmore (Tucke) Drake in Pittsfield, New Hampshire, on October 11, 1798. After teaching for several years in New Hampshire and New Jersey, Drake established a book auction business in 1828. Two years later, he opened the first antiquarian bookstore in the United States in Cornhill, Boston.
